Top 10 Things to Know About LEEDĀ® for Neighborhood Developmentā„¢ Rating System

LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) is the much-anticipated and latest rating system under the LEED umbrella.

Cunningham’s Dan Fenocchio and Martin Lewis recently taught a seminar for the US Green Building Council – Northern California Chapter.

If you missed it, here are the Top 10 things participants learned about LEED-ND…

10. "Green" is no longer just for buildings… an entire neighborhood can be LEED certified.

9. There is no minimum or maximum project size for a LEED-ND project.

8. LEED-ND has 3 stages for certification.

7. LEED-ND has 3 completely new credit categories compared to other LEED rating systems.

6. A project must satisfy 12 prerequisites in order to start the LEED-ND certification process.

5. Over 80% of the green infrastructure and buildings (GIB) prerequisites and credits from the LEED for New Construction and Major Renovations (LEED-NC) rating system overlap with LEED-ND prerequisites and credits.

4. State and local governments may eventually begin requiring developments to be designed using LEED-ND criteria.

3. Location, location, location – the locale of your project can make or break your credit earning potential.

2. Reducing vehicle miles traveled (VMT) is one of the major goals of LEED-ND.  Break free of "auto dependent suburbs" and start creating safer and more walkable neighborhoods.

And the #1 thing participants learned from the LEED-ND seminar is...
