Cunningham Cares About the Community – Part 3

September 28, 2020

We challenged our employees to donate to a non-profit that had been impacted by COVID and explain why they chose that charity. Cunningham matched their donation. Here’s six reasons why…

I chose this organization because it is in my backyard of Woodland and because of the great work they do to help those in need of food, housing or substance abuse treatment. They have really had to adapt to the changing environment of COVID-19 by cutting their volunteers due to County Health regulations and moving elderly clients with health concerns from emergency shelter to motel rooms.

I chose them because they are local and I believe in the principle “think globally, act locally”.

For 16 years, I have delivered meals to seniors on Route 5 in West Sacramento. I share Route 5 with other volunteers, so my commitment is one Monday a month to check on my seniors and deliver their warm lunch meal. Due to COVID, the program ceased daily volunteer routes and adapted a weekly delivery by Meals on Wheels staff to service the seniors. All seniors who were on a wait list moved to priority, so the volume of meals increased, while the volunteer workforce was benched. COVID has resulted in added costs for staff deliveries and added food costs for the increased demand. I’m happy to donate funds during this time when we are unable to visit the seniors in person. The need to support Meals on Wheels is there more than ever.  #WestSacBestSac

During the lockdown the homeless had nowhere to go, and those employed found themselves out of work, preventing them from making rent and putting food on the table. Loaves & Fishes serves these individuals with a plethora of programs from providing daily meals to providing shelter for the chronically homeless. Loaves & Fishes is a private charity that relies only on private donations from the community, and they need donations now more than ever to combat the cycle of hunger and homelessness now amplified by COVID-19.

For many, the isolation, worry and stress of the current COVID crisis is overwhelming to the point of considering suicide as their only relief. It is vital, especially during such trying times, that SPYC maintain the programs, training and 24-hour crisis hotline volunteers that help so many in our community.

YCN provides 24/7 care services for children age 0 to 5 during times of crisis. In addition, the nursery staff provides wrap around services to the children’s families as additional support to move the family out of crisis. During the pandemic YCN has provided essential to children and Families in our community. They immediately saw a rise in domestic violence, one of the more common reasons that children arrive at the Nursery. In addition YCN: Supported families with job loss and food security issues. This is when the EDD was not responding in a timely manner and families had no money or food. Supported essential workers with no childcare accessible in our community since many closed during the lockdown. Is currently seeing a several mothers with severe post-partum and with no support and it currently being very difficult to get mental health access to these mothers. Helped the Public Health Nurses with families that could not care for the children that tested positive with corona virus and the children needed care. Helped the hospitals with new born babies being born with the mother and family members testing positive and the child had nowhere to go. And they did all this while constantly wiping down everything they possibly could to keep the nursery sanitized, going through tens of thousands of wipes and bottles of sanitizer!
