If relocating cross-country for your first job after college isn’t daunting enough—how about doing that during a pandemic? Welcome to Sacramento… what a first impression for Amine Benchekroun, the newest Staff Engineer to join the ranks of Cunningham Engineering. It’s been a summer he’ll never forget.

Where did you go to school and what led you to become a civil engineer?

I attended Virginia Tech for college and I chose civil engineering because I was always fascinated by all types of buildings and structures. I wanted to understand the science and the engineering that go behind it and I found out that civil engineering would be the right major to pursue a career that I am passionate about.

Moving across the country is a big decision, what was it about California and Cunningham that made you want to do that move?

After my on-campus interview at Virginia Tech with JoAnn and Jessie, I had a clear picture of what Cunningham is, its culture and its mission. When I talked to Dan, we touched upon many subjects and he proved to me that at Cunningham there will always be room for growth. Also, moving to California was something that I always had in the back of my head and when this opportunity came about, I could not turn it down.

How are you adapting to life in California (even though you haven’t been able to fully experience it yet due to COVID) and life at Cunningham?

I am getting used to the city and its surroundings. I was lucky enough to find some outgoing roommates who made moving to California much more fun. Cunningham is adapting well with the current circumstances and I find its flexibility, about either working from home or from the office, helps its employees immensely to stay safe and perform well.

What is something you are looking forward to doing once things do safely open up again?

I am looking forward to get to know more of my coworkers and do some social activities together.

What’s your favorite thing about Cunningham so far?

My favorite thing about Cunningham is the team spirit. I always find people to answer my questions and give me the right directions. They are always there for you and always willing to help. They all make you feel that you are a part of the team.
