Cunningham Cares About the Community – Part 2

September 21, 2020

We challenged our employees to donate to a non-profit that had been impacted by COVID and explain why they chose that charity. Cunningham matched their donation. Here’s six reasons why…

Deborah and I are big fans of the UCD Vet program - one of our dogs was even a blood donor! Our donation to the Catastrophic Need Fund is, unfortunately, timely.

With the increase of people who are experiencing food insecurity I wanted to share some of my stimulus incentive with Meals on Wheels to help support their program.

I’m passionate about this charity because it provides legal representation for wrongfully incarcerated people (see movie Just Mercy). They have been effected by COVID-19 as have many charities which are supported by donations which decrease in a recession. Prisons have terrible living conditions and have been hot spots for COVID-19 deaths. This charity is committed to ending mass incarceration and excessive punishment in the U.S., challenging racial and economic injustice, and protecting basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society. They’ve earned the top ranking from Charity Navigator and won a Skoll Award for our impact on social justice reform.

This organization helps homeless families by providing shelter throughout the week at local churches allowing families to stay together rather than being split up. They work with the families to find work and housing in an effort to move them out onto their own.  Since the Sacramento affiliate opened in 2005 they have provided services to over 850 families with more than 98% of families securing housing. The pandemic has caused many of their local shelter church sites to be closed. They are in turn having to place families in motels, which has been an unforeseen burden on their finances.

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento is doing great things for the region. The organization builds and revitalizes neighborhoods while providing a hand-up to deserving families. While experiencing a drastic impact due to COVID-19, the committed and passionate staff has quickly pivoted and continues to push forward to meet the goals of the organization and serve the needs of our community.

Why? As a nurse, my wife sees firsthand how the Child Life Program reduces anxiety for hospitalized pediatric patients, including some with COVID. The program's activities include art and music therapy, facility dog program, and gift cards for food and fun for the affected families.
